New investment for Creative Employment Opportunities in Gloucestershire

Following on from the success of our current Creative Careers work, Create Gloucestershire is pleased to announce that it has secured investment of just under £55,000 to create 23 more new employment opportunities in the cultural sector for 18-24 year olds.  The placements have been secured through the Creative Employment Programme, a £15m Arts Council England fund delivered by Creative and Cultural Skills. They will open up new entry routes into Britain’s fastest growing industry at a time when many young people are struggling to get a foothold in the world of work.

For many young people facing socio-economic or disabling barriers: pathways into the creative industries can be especially invisible.  Additional support from the Summerfield Trust, will allow us to develop strategic relationships with specific youth organisations who work with the most disadvantaged young people across the county including those facing rural poverty/exclusion, provide bursaries for micro businesses taking on young people and establish new partnerships to deliver careers events and training with various colleges and schools across the county. This will help to ensure young people in the greatest need hear about these opportunities.

The consortium of 17 employers are based across Gloucestershire in key urban centres including The Wilson Art Gallery, the Town Hall in Cheltenham, the Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury, GDance, The Music Works and Art Shape in and near to Gloucester and in rural areas, Hawkwood College and ACP Gallery in Painswick, SVA and Spaniel in the Works theatre in Stroud, as well as Taurus Crafts and Artspace Cinderford in the Forest of Dean.   The roles include opportunities in marketing, curation, finance, music and dance leadership, technical and event management for both apprentices and interns.

As part of our Creative Careers strand of work, Create Gloucestershire (CG) has been developing new strategic relationships with the county’s Job Centre Plus (JCP) offices and with training bodies such as Adult Education Gloucestershire and FE/HE colleges including Gloucestershire College, Stroud and South Gloucestershire College and Cirencester College.  We have also been working with GFirst on a creative industries “roadshow” for schools to ensure young people know about the opportunities in the creative industries from Year 9 onwards.  You might recognise a few familiar faces from our current co-hort of interns and apprentices in the short film about different creative career options,  which accompanies the roadshow.

Interns can gain valuable experience in their home areas making living in the Forest more sustainable for young people and keeping talent and expertise here."

Hayley Wayre, Fundraising intern with The Roses theatre celebrates her success: “The Roses has always been an important place to me, and to have such an active role in securing its future has been both a pleasure and a challenge.  I look forward to my future with The Roses, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue my role”.

Steff Willis shares her experience as a Project Manager intern with Art shape: “I am so thankful to the Creative Employment Programme (CEP) for giving me so much support in finding an internship, giving me the wonderful opportunity to progress my professional development in a creative environment. Because of the support of the CEP throughout my internship and Art Shape’s brilliant training I am now thrilled to start my new position as Assistant Project Manager. I hope to continue learning and growing my career in the arts to really use my creativity to make a difference in the community”.

There are 5 new jobs waiting to be snapped up over the coming month, intern opportunities will be advertised through the Job Centre Plus and require the applicant to be claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance and apprenticeships through the Apprenticeship Vacancy Matching Service.

·                         Marketing and Sales apprentice at the Roses Theatre, Tewkesbury

·                         Sales and Gallery Assistant at Wychwood Arts in Stow in the Wold

·                         Education and Exhibitions Assistant Apprenticeship at New Brewery Arts, Cirencester
