University of Gloucestershire seeing non-exec Council Members

Vacancies for External Members of the University Council (Governing Body)

The University of Gloucestershire is a vibrant and dynamic academic community of some 10,000 students and 1,000 staff. We are a student-centred, teaching-led, modern University.

Our goals are to give our students outstanding support to learn in a community which values them as individuals; to give our students a breadth and richness of experience which prepares them for rewarding lives and successful careers; and to make an outstanding contribution to the well-being of Gloucestershire.

We have long-established and distinctive strengths in Education and public services, Media, Business, Sport, and Fine Art. We have been training teachers since 1847 and our primary and secondary school training programmes are rated outstanding by Ofsted.  We have ambitious development plans, including building a new student village in Cheltenham, and creating a new Business School and sports facilities in Gloucester.

The University Council is seeking to appoint four new non-executive Council Members. Applications are invited from individuals with a strong personal commitment to higher education; with a successful track record of leadership and achievement in their professional lives; with an understanding of the leadership and management challenges in large, complex organisations; and experience of non-executive roles at Board level.

The primary responsibilities of Council include setting the mission and strategy of the University, monitoring institutional performance to ensure financial sustainability and the achievement of the University’s goals, and ensuring sound corporate governance. The role is not remunerated, although reasonable expenses are reimbursed, and we have prepared a statement about the broader benefits you can expect to gain as a Council member, including the opportunity to build a larger, more diverse network, and to engage in something of real value.

The University is committed to advancing equality and valuing diversity in all of its practices. To support this, we particularly welcome applications from people who can enhance the diversity of the Council’s membership.
