EVALUATION SUPPORTS CONTINUATION OF ARTS PROJECT WORKING WITH FAMILIES EXPERIENCING DOMESTIC ABUSE

Your Future, a creative initiative working with women and children who have experienced domestic abuse, has begun its second year. Findings from a recent evaluation of its first year support the continued roll-out of the project, which is led by The Roses theatre, and delivered in partnership with Art Shape, New Brewery Arts, Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum, Cheltenham Children’s Centre, Cinderford Arts Space, Gloucester Folk Museum, Gloucester Guildhall and Prema Arts.

The evaluation conducted by Willis Newson, found that the creative workshops facilitated by artists helped to improve participants’ confidence, gave them pride in personal achievements, and helped them form relationships that made them feel less isolated.

“I’d never done anything like this before. And now I think, with 2 hours every week, just for me, how far have I come! […] It has changed me too, it has. I have got a job now and go to work. Why didn’t I get one before? I’d never had anything for myself, and then suddenly I am able to sit with people, talk to people and you ladies were there to ask, “why don’t you go for it, what’s stopping you?”

Your Future is an innovative cross art-form project offering creative arts workshops to families who have experienced domestic abuse through a collaboration between 8 arts venues across Gloucestershire. In 2012-2013 it delivered a 20-week course of activities to mums, teenagers and younger children referred on to the project by local social care providers and professionals working with the family groups.  Participants were offered separate creative activities at a local participating venue, facilitated by experienced and highly-trained artists.

Your Future was supported by Gloucestershire County Council, and Your Future Too has received funding from the Big Lottery Reaching Communities Fund
