Arts Council chair promotes Gloucestershire social prescribing initiative
In an article for the Guardian, Sir Peter Bazalgette, Chair of Arts Council England, discusses the positive impact that arts and culture have on people's health and wellbeing. The NHS is under increasing pressure from squeezed funding and increased numbers of patients, but
"As it happens, quietly and with increasing effectiveness, medics and carers, health authorities and local councils alike are turning to the arts as one way to help boost the wellbeing of the nation. This is about prevention rather than cure. And, as ever with the arts and culture, it’s about enriching lives, too." - Sir Peter Bazalgette
He describes initiatives that are making a difference across the UK, including Gloucestershire's 'art on prescription' service Art Lift, and talks about the importance of building a good evidence base for the benefits social prescribing.
At Create Gloucestershire, we're making headway with our Cultural Commissioning Programme, looking at how the work of great projects like Art Lift, Mind Song and Your Future can be offered more consistently across the county - see our project page for more information.
