Is Theatre Just for Posh People?
Thursday 12 October
10:30am - 5pm
St Hilda's Hall, Matson, Gloucester, GL4 6JG
A one-day-event in the heart of Matson, Gloucester’s largest housing estate, actively exploring the question “is theatre just for posh people?”
Over the last year Strike A Light’s conversation and action around diversity has thought about class:
How do we engage with the predominantly working class audiences who live in Matson?
Gloucester is traditionally known as an area of low cultural engagement, with areas in wards, including Matson ranking in the most deprived fifth of neighbourhoods nationally. In 2016 we started to work collaboratively with Matson residents and co-produced their first theatre festival; the GL4 Festival.
The GL4 Festival enters its third season in October and are proudly co-hosting this event, is theatre just for posh people?, with Strike A Light and Create Gloucestershire’ and fabulously supported by Gloucester Services and the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust.
What to expect on the day:
It will be informal, action based, conversational, jargon free, with delicious lunch, new performance and brilliant panel speakers including:
Rhiannon White from CommonWealth
Conrad Murray, Beat boxer and Artistic Director of the Beatbox Collective
Syima Aslam, Bradford Literature Festival
Sarah Blowers, Co-artistic Director of Strike A Light
Viv Gordon, vivgordon.com
Sarah O’Donnell and Naomi Draper, Creative Producers of the GL4 Festival
We would like to encourage organisations to bring a community member with them, someone who is connected to a place or group that you have thought you may want to work with but haven’t quite done it yet. Each ticket admits one delegate plus a community member as a guest.
If you would like to stay afterwards both GL4 and Strike A Light Festival will be in full swing; we’d love for you to stay on and see some great work placed in the heart of our communities. Click here to see the full festival programme
