Youth Dance Internship opportunity with Create Gloucestershire and Strike a Light

Create Gloucestershire (CG) and Strike A Light (SAL) are looking to recruit a Youth Dance Intern to assist with the practical delivery of the Whole School dance project with RISE Youth Dance. The chosen candidate will have the opportunity to work directly with young people in two Gloucester schools (primary and secondary), support the planning and creative process with RISE Youth Dance, attend live performance events and help in the production of platform events.

This role is a great opportunity for someone looking to work in the dance sector in Gloucestershire, who would like more experience in working in schools, who has an interest in youth dance and has recently completed, or is currently undertaking a dance degree.

This is a paid opportunity and the chosen candidate will work on a freelance basis for approx. 25 days from November 2018 - June 2019, on a weekly basis on Fridays during school term time.

Background to the project

Create Gloucestershire are running a test in 4 pilot schools in Gloucester over 2 years, of a creative based and whole school approach to promote social and emotional wellbeing of children and young people. This is a prevention focused pilot for mental health that will test a wider system and partnership approach. The pilots are co-produced in partnership with pupils, teaching staff, non-teaching staff, governors, parents, VCSE groups and health services. The partnership group consists of Create Gloucestershire (CG), Strike A Light (SAL), Rise Youth Dance, and Art Shape Ltd.

The aim is for this pilot to generate positive health and educational outcomes for participating children and young people and provide wider learning and insights in the following areas:

  1. How a creative and asset based approach across a whole school/community culture can support social and emotional well-being and prevent mental health issues escalating.

  2. The business model that can sustain and scale a multi-agency investment framework moving forward.

  3. How to ensure a better “match” between NHS health care pathways of intervention, treatment and recovery with educational, arts and youth pathways of support and progression

The Whole Schools Social and Emotional Health Programme is funded by Gloucestershire NHS Trust, Gloucestershire County Council, participating schools, Gloucester City Homes and Gloucester’s Great Place project which is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Youth Dance Intern role:

Main areas of the internship

-  Assist RISE dance leaders in delivery of weekly sessions, choreographic tasks and performance opportunities

-  Commit to sharing the learning from your internship e.g. blog, reflection log

-  Help in the documentation of the project in 2 schools

-  Support monitoring and administrative tasks as required by SAL and CG

-  Be a positive role model for the young people and represent Create Glos and Strike A Light at each participating school

Person Specification Essential

  1. Experience of working in dance, either formally or informally, over the past two years

  2. Strong interest in a career in the dance and creative sector in Gloucestershire

  3. Knowledge of and an interest in youth dance and working with young people

  4. Basic computer skills, such as word processing and email

  5. Understanding of current online social networks

  6. Good communication skills, both written and verbal

  7. Interest in marketing and publicity and in sharing the learning from your internship

  8. Ability to work in a small team and on own initiative

  9. Eligibility to work in the UK

  10. Be available to work on Fridays term-time on a weekly basis over approx. 8 months


  1. Dance qualification to degree level or relevant training

  2. Any experience in organising arts activities or mixed media events

  3. Understanding of value of health and well-being in an arts context

  4. Knowledge of the arts in Gloucestershire and the links to local communities

  5. Interest in digital arts practice

  6. Choreographic skills
