Free workshop: Using Photography to Tell Difficult Stories with Eugenia Maximova
In this thought-provoking workshop, award-winning Bulgarian photographer Eugenia Maximova will guide participants through the process of using photography to tell a difficult story, based on her own experience of losing her sister-in-law to a brutal act of murder in 2018.
For the best experience, we recommend attending both sessions.
Day 1: Saturday 17th February 10:30 – 16:30
Participants will work as a group to create photographs and organise these into a narrative, telling the story of an historical event based in Gloucestershire (details to be revealed on the day).
Day 2: Sunday 18th February 11:30 – 15:30
Participants will work individually, drawing on the concepts learned in Day 1 to create their own projects. Participants can either bring materials to tell their own story, or choose a story from the selection that will be on offer.
The workshop will start at 22 Kings Walk, where Eugenia will talk about her exhibited work Silent River. It will then move to the Hundred Heroines Atelier in the Eastgate Centre, where studio equipment, props and cameras will be available for participants’ use.

The Workshops are free to attend, but donations are welcome. All materials and light refreshments will be provided.
About Eugenia Maximova
(b. 1973, Bulgaria) Based in Vienna, Eugenia Maximova’s artistic practice engages with socio-political contexts. Inspired by her childhood in Bulgaria, she explores issues of identity and everyday life in post-communist cultures, consumption, and transience. Eugenia’s ongoing photo-project Silent River examines the silence surrounding the death of her sister-in-law, 30-year old television journalist Victoria Marinova, who was brutally raped and murdered in the Bulgarian city of Ruse. Silent River won the 2023 inaugural Austrian Photobook prize.
