Artists/Muralists wanted for a project in Stroud

Cotswold Canals Connected is inviting artists to help transform Cotswold Canal Trust’s bookshop with bold, imaginative murals. This space has a huge potential to become a vibrant landmark that reflects the creativity and character of our community. We want the new artworks to breathe life into this building, encouraging people to visit the space, enjoy the murals, and experience the area as an open-air gallery full of colour, stories, and local pride.

This commission is part of Cotswold Canals Connected, a Heritage Lottery-funded initiative reconnecting people with the canal’s rich built, natural, and social heritage. As part of our Community Engagement programme, we’re commissioning a series of murals to brighten underpasses and neglected walls along the canal corridor.  This commission will be the first stage of the project.

The Approach - See photos at the end of the post for pictures of the walls.

  • The mural/murals will be painted directly onto the Cotswold Canals Trust Bookshop in Brimscombe, both sides that are visible.

  • The surfaces are pebbledashed, artists will need to take this into account when designing a mural.

  • All murals will be finished with a protective anti-graffiti coating to ensure longevity and ease of maintenance – this will be completed by Cotswold Canals Connected

What We’re Looking For

We’re inviting two artists to create original mural or murals that:

  • Are visually striking and accessible to a wide audience.

  • Have a strong design and community relevance for this part of the canal corridor.  We want the mural/s to have a theme that is connected to the canal and its nature or heritage.

  • Effectively cover the tagging that is currently on the buildings.

You should be comfortable working in public spaces and engaging with passers-by during the painting process.
