Gloucester Great Place
2017-2020 Funded by the National Lottery, through Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund
In 2017 Gloucester City Council won £1.49 million for Gloucester Great Place: a three-year project to put culture at the heart of the city's future. It was one of only two Great Place projects in the South West. Coordinated by Gloucester Culture Trust, it brought partners together across the city, each leading a different strand of the work. We led the cultural commissioning strand, working with a wide range of arts and community partners to connect culture with the city's wider ambitions. Great Place helped set Gloucester on a new cultural path, and its legacy includes the creative agency Jolt.

Creative Age is an arts-based, social community project for people living with dementia and their carers who still live independently. Participants take part in focused creative group sessions facilitated by experienced artists, exploring imaginatively with collective story-making, seated movement, dance, music, visual stimuli and poetry, with content driven by the participants’ interests. Before the pandemic, creative sessions were followed by socialising over tea and cake, hosted and coordinated by Bethesda Church and committed volunteers (who also support the artist-led sessions).

In March 2019, Gloucester Culture Trust launched the Creative Leadership Trainee Programme. The aim: to nurture the future creative leaders of today.
The programme has created four full-time, year-long jobs within four of Gloucester’s creative organisations, all of which are fully funded by the Creative Entrepreneurs strand of the city’s Great Place project. This area of our work, which we call JOLT, is about creating opportunities and a supportive space which enables people to work and make a living in the creatives industries, right here in Gloucester.
Matson came on board as one of the Art of Libraries test libraries in October 2017 but before I talk about the project, and my role as a Creative Catalyst, I just want to set the scene and talk a bit about Matson, just to give an understanding of the context in which we are working.
